ゲーム業界の専門家たちの新しい報告によると、オンラインゲームをする人の数は、間もなく世界で1億人に達するだろう。これはほんの数年前に比べ大幅な増加である。オンラインゲームをする人の数が増えるにつれ（as）、この傾向の与える影響に対する懸念(concerns) も高まっている。
Jane Abbotには、学校をさぼってインターネットカフェに行ってオンラインゲームをしたことのある2人の10代のゲーマーの子どもがいる。「オンラインゲームは禁止(ban)されるべきだと思うわ」と彼女は言う。「危険だし、若者世代全体(entire)を危険にさらしているわ。」Abbotは17歳と14歳の息子たちにゲームをやめるように言った。外出を禁じたりもした。それでも彼らはゲームをしにこっそり抜け出しインターネットカフェに行くのだった。

Felipe Gomezにとってオンラインゲームの世界を拒絶(resist) するのは難しかった。「ぼくは現実社会のすべてをあきらめる羽目になったんだ(end
up)」と彼は語った。「毎日20時間もゲームをしていた。架空の世界に入り込んでしまったんだ。出かける気にもなれなくなった。食事にまともにとらなくなった。コンピューターの前でジャンクフードを食べるだけ。友達とも遊ばなくなった。夜通しゲームさ。彼女はもう嫌になって別れたんだ。架空の世界に入り込みすぎて、現実世界がからっぽ(empty)に思えたんだ」
オンラインゲームに若者たちが依存(addicted to)してしまうのには多くの理由があるのかもしれない。この問題(issue)を研究しているJames Brown 博士は、ゲームには人に自己実現したと感じさせる力があると信じている。ゲームで勝つと本物の達成感(a real sense of achievement) が得られる。架空ではあるが、世界の中心にいるような気持ちになる。多くの若者が試験の重圧やさまざまな問題に直面する（face）現実社会においては、こうした成功体験は得難いものなのかもしれない。
Jeong-Suk Kimはゲームにはほかにも魅力があるという。「忙しい一日の最後にゲームをするとリラックスできるの。結局のところ、リラックスするのに本を読んだりテレビを見たりすることや、友達とショッピングモールでぶらぶらするのを変わらないでしょ。」
