Satellites observation revealed that the huge crack appeared in Afar region in eastern Africa in 2005 was caused by volcanic activity underneath the surface.
The region lies on three tectonic plates, which are continuously moving, crushing in some places like the Indian subcontinent and splitting in others like the Africa and America.
As the three tectonic plates move apart from each other, Afar region is expected to be separated from the African continent and a new sea will emerge between them like the Atlantic in a million years’ time.
